This is a THUMBNAIL gallery
Do not try to resize your full-sized pictures to match the size of the thumbnails. This is a thumbnail gallery! Thumbnails of the full-sized pictures are displayed if they exist. If no thumbnail exists for a picture, then the full sized picture will be displayed instead.

Upload your pictures sized about 640x480 to fit on 800x600 screens without scrolling.

The 'create thumbnails' is already checked on the upload page.

After you upload the pictures, you can create new thumbnails. You can create individual thumbnails by clicking on 'MakeTn' underneath' images while logged-in, or by clicking on 'MakeThumbnail' in the image browser.

You do not have to first delete an existing thumbnail in order to re-create a thumbnail. Just click on the 'Make.. ' link.

Thumbnails don't have to exist for a picture: The full-sized picture will display instead.

Thumbnail galleries look best if the thumbnails are all about the same height. Use the 'All Thumbnails' link to create ALL thumbnails by any one of these methods:
percent
height
width
column-width

choose height and try setting the height to 150. (click on height)
Now all of your thumbnails will have a height of 150. Click on a thumbnail to display the full-sized picture.

The resize-image in the image browser should not be used unless you really want to resize the full sized picture....

(Thumbnail file names are the picture file name prefixed with 'tn-'. The thumbnail gallery scripts display the thumbnail if it exists, otherwise it displays the full sized picture. The full-sized picture will be limited to the column width if it is wider than the gallery page.)
Blurry thumbnails
If you re-size a thumbnail and the new thumbnail is blurry, then this is because the browser is still using it's previous copy of the thumbnail. Simply reload the page to re-fresh the thumbnails.

Another reason for a blurry thumbnail is if you have created a thumbnail that is larger than the actual picture.
Articles for newsletter page
Your member status at example.org is set to 'official' which will give you access to more content than normal members.

The admin assigned you as columnist for the 'newsletter' and 'info for newsletter' pages.

You can create and edit content in the center or main column for those pages.

'Official' members can also add content to the 'message board' page.

Click on 'new article' to create new content.

Click on 'Update Images' to manage images in /images/newsletter

Uploaded images must be less than 2,000,000 bytes (this may vary depending upon the settings used by your system administrator). Thumbnail images are automatically created at upload when the create thumbnail box is checked. Articles can display non-thumbnail images provided they don't exceed the column width. It is preferred to display the thumbnail image in articles (The thumbnail image begins with 'tn-'). You can resize thumbnails by clicking on 'makethumbnail'.

Articles have an admin line below them:
E (E) D M U (10) D MAC STY FLT ACS [g,n,n,s,o,c,e,a]

E - edit

(E) - raw edit

D - delete

M - move to page, column, position

U - move article up

(40) - the article's position in the column

D - Move article down

MAC - Insert a macro, such as an Image, Inset text, link, and others.

STY - change the title and text font style by selecting the desired item from the picklist.

FLT - Float the article into the beginning of the next article. When given a name, then the article can be inserted any number of times with the float macro.

ACS - set access privileges for an article - set article visibility to 'n' to hide article from others while you are editing it. You can also set the article to not be visible until a certain date and time.

MAC: Image, is how we will describe clicking on 'MAC' then selecting 'Image'.

This image was inserted by clicking on MAC and selecting Image. Then select the /images/newsletter folder and choose this picture.
So, to insert an image, do:
MAC: Image
Select the /images/newsletter folder
choose an image
choose whether to use left, center, or right alignment
choose whether to initially set it to the top or bottom

Large images can distort the page formatting. Click on the image thumbnail name (begins with 'tn-') to insert the thumbnail instead of the full-sized image. Click on 'makethumbnail' to resize the thumbnail. You probably should not actually resize the image, but only resize the thumbnail.

This was created by clicking on, MAC and selecting Inset.
MAC: Inset- insert a red lettered textbox into your article

[g,n,s,o,c,e,a] - the first letter of member levels that can view the article. (newsletter articles have to be visible to all) - you can restrict the page access by getting the admin to set the page view-by to the desired member levels.

Some of the above admin links may be altered for 'columnists'.

Article macros will have their own admin line underneath the article's admin line:
[macro-name] E D U << < > >> D
E - Edit
D - Delete
U - Move to previous paragraph
<< - Move to previous 8 words
< - Move to previous word
> - Move to next word
>> - Move to next 8 words
D - Move to next Paragraph

New Macro and MAC Links
Macros are imbedded into article text and let you create thumbnail galleries, login, register, email, member list, chat, and other functions. Macros have the format:
{macro-name|parameter1|parameter2|...}
where a new article macro would be:
{new_article|Click here to create a new article}
which produces:
Click here to create a new article

You do not have to know what macros are available or how to create a macro in your article. The new 'Macro' and 'MAC' links do that for you.

The admin links at the top of each page have a new 'Macro' link under 'NEW: Macro'. This is for adding a new article with the selected macro as the only initial entry.

The admin links underneath each article have a new 'MAC" link. This is for adding a macro to an existing article.

The initial page after clicking on 'Macro' or 'MAC' is this list of macro selection links:

Article Toc - Horizontal table of contents to the center content
Article Vertical Toc - Vertical table of contents to the center content
Chat - Create chat login form
DateTime - Outputs date time string as below article titles

'Top' is a link and will instantly append a 'Top' link to an article when 'MAC' is used. It will instantly create a new article with a 'Top' link when 'Macro' is used.

Other macros require selection of parameters and will give you a page where you select or input the necessary parameters. Try each of the macro links. It won't break your computer.

  • View-By: First letter of member levels that can view the article. (Columnists, editors, and admin can always see articles.)

How do I hide work-in-progress?
Make incomplete work non-visible until it is ready for viewing by the public. For articles, click on ACS below the article to set access restrictions and click on 'n' at 'Visible y n'.

For pages, use the 'PAGE: access' link at the top of the page. Set Visible to 'n'.

Invisible articles show a red background V in the article's admin links.

Invisible pages show a red background n at the top of the page at: VISIBLE: [n]

Invisible page navigation links (Home, Resume, ...) will display the link as red on white to indicate that page is invisible.
How do I allow/put someone in as boardmember, or as editor?
MANUALLY
You can create a member manually by using BROWSE: members, set their level to 'official'. You then must send the userid/password to the person.

USE REGISTRATION
Better than that is to let new members click on a 'register' link on the home page.

REGISTRATION TYPE
The registration type is 'open', 'moderated', or 'closed'

'closed' - if a link to register existed, the user would get the reply 'Registration is closed'

'open' - Anyone on earth may self-register via the registration link. They must click on a link in their registration confirmation email to actually be registered. Newly registered members automatically have 'normal' user status. You have to use EDIT:Members and set m_user_status to their new user level.

'moderated' - Anyone on earth may attempt to register. They must click on a link in their registration confirmation email. They are then notified that the registration process is moderated, and to wait for the moderator to approve their registration. Then the registration moderator gets an email stating that a user needs registration approval and has a link for the moderator to activate: The moderator must be logged-in (currently admin), then click on the approval link in the confirmation email.

Use BROWSE:Site and set 'registration_type' to open, closed, or moderated. Moderated registration is the preferred method for sites with restricted membership.

REGISTRATION SOAPBOX
You must keep spammers and identity thieves from discovering names and addresses of your members. If you let ANYONE on earth freely register then they will eventually do it and have access to private information. Search engines eventually will index any and all of the site that is available to guest users. You must use moderated registration along with page and article access restrictions to protect your site.

A list of names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of 100 home owners may be worth hundreds of dollars to the right solicitor.

AFTER REGISTRATION
New members are assigned the 'normal' status.

Once registered, an admin may elevate the user from 'normal' status to 'official' status via BROWSE:Members then change 'm_user_status' from 'normal' to 'official'. (Make all of your officers 'official').

PAGE COLUMNIST AND PAGE EDITOR
A normal, special, or official member can be a page columnist, or page editor. To make some user a page editor, use EDIT:Page and set p_editor to their userid. To make some user a page columnist, use EDIT:Page and set p_columnist to their userid.

A 'page editor' or 'page columnist' can move articles to any other page where they have 'editor' or 'columnist' permissions. An editor has more control of the format of new articles than does a columnist.

Any registered member can be a 'site editor' or 'site columnist': Their user level is set to 'editor' or 'columnist' instead of 'normal' or 'official'. This person would have those privileges on all pages.

PAGE PRIVILEGES
Use
SHOW:Priv
To see the privileges for a page. While in SHOW:Priv, you can click on the page name to change permissions.

How do I indent the first line in my paragraphs?
Place {indent} at the beginning of a line.
Access ACS Admin Link
The ACS link lets you edit an article's access: a_visible, a_time_on, a_time_off, a_view_by.

#00525 Ed Del Mv U (0) D STY FLT ACS IMG TXT View-By: [o,c,e,a]

Make an article invisible by setting a_visible to 'n'. Invisible articles have a red V in the admin links. Regular users won't see the article.

Adjust the on_time and/or the off_time to cause the article to be visible at a specified time and then go invisible at a specified time. Articles where the 'On Time' is beyond NOW, or the 'Off Time' is less than NOW will have a red 'Timed' in the admin links indicating that regular users cannot see the article.

View By: You can leave the article view-by set for all user levels and let the page view-by be the viewing limiter. For private information, it is safer to also limit the article view-by.
Float FLT Admin Link
A floating article stands out when we choose a style with a background color and/or a border. In fact, the background should always be set to keep the background of the article underneath the floating article from showing.
The 'FLT' link of an article's admin links lets you set the article to float into the top of the next article. In addition to turning on float, you can choose the width of the floated article and the alignment (left, center, right). Left and right aligned floated articles will have text of other articles flowing around them. Center aligned floated articles will not have any text flowing around them.

E (E) D M U (0) D STY FLT ACS [o,c,e,a]

Just click on 'FLT' to load the float settings page for the article.
Style STY Admin Link
Another admin link 'STY' lets you copy the style of an article on the _style_ page into that article.

#00525 Ed Del Mv U (0) D STY FLT ACS IMG TXT View-By: [o,c,e,a]

The articles in the center column of the _style_ page provide in-line styles (a_title_style and a_text_style) for articles on other pages. Just click on 'STY' in an article's admin links. You will be presented with a pick-list of titles of articles in the center column of the _style_ page. Your article will acquire the same style as the style article selected.

I figured out how to load an object/jpeg into the image file, but not how to place it in an article
UPDATE: The OBJ link has been replaced with IMG and TXT link. See above.

Add Image to Images Folder
Use BROWSE:Images to submit general article images. You will be in the image browser which has an 'upload' link. It is best to keep image file names in all lower case because file names in linux systems are case sensitive (AAA.jpg is not the same as aaa.jpg as in windows).

Attach Image to Article
I attached your mountains pix to this article by clicking on 'OBJ' then click on 'Browse Images' underneath the '0_image' box.

In the image browser, I clicked on the thumbnail link 'tn-new winter 1aa.jpg'.

Magically, the image file name appears in the o_image box. Then click on 'Insert record'. Your image will appear at the top left of your article.

In the development queue: A simplier way to attach images by bypassing the OBJ link and having IMG and TXT links to create image or text objects. This would bypass the OBJ form.

Add Image to Gallery
Use BROWSE:Gallery to submit image collections. You have a Gallery page. It displays thumbnails or full-sized images that are present in the gallery. Full-sized images will be displayed if no thumbnail exists for that image. Click on a thumbnail image to get a pop-up window of the full-sized image.

Add Comments to Your Gallery Images
Create and upload a text file with the same base name as the image file and with the .txt extension: 'image file name.txt'. Then that image will have comments displayed at the bottom, left, or right of the image. The text position is set by the gallery macro. More on that later...

Display Gallery
You have to create an article with a 'gallery' macro that names the gallery, specifies the .txt placement (left, right, bottom, or none), and specifies the width of the thumbnail display.

This has already been done on your gallery page. As admin, examine the article on that page.

In the development queue: A picklist of macros to insert into an article. Each macro would have it's own form to choose macro parameters (as is you have to know the correct syntax of the macro)
